Submissions Around Town in July


Tupulo Press is open for submissions of book-length and chapbook-length poetry until Thursday July 31. Published works will be distributed across the United States, but poets of any nationality are welcome to enter.

In celebration of The Stella Prize, the Suburban Review will be releasing an issue called the Stellar Edition to celebrate the literary feats of women. The deadline for submissions of short fiction, poetry, artwork and photography is Sunday August 3. They’re running a Pozible campaign that will allow them to pay all contributors $100, so if you’d like to donate, see the website for details.

And of course Ricochet is still accepting submissions of poetry, short fiction, nonfiction, reviews, artwork and photography until Friday August 1.


Fairy Tale Review is interested in poems, stories and essays with a fairy-tale feel — mainstream to experimental, genre to literary, realist to fabulist. First prize is $1000 and entries close Tuesday July 15.

The Grace Marion Wilson Emerging Writers Competition is open to new writers with no more than three published short stories. Applications must be made online by Wednesday July 23. Entry is free for Writers Victoria members, but you will need to pay $20 if you’re a non-member.

The Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize is open to personal essays, memoirs, narrative nonfiction, social commentary, travel writing, historical accounts and biographies from international writers. First prize is $1000 CAD. Entries close Friday August 1.

The John Marsden/Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers is open for entries from writers under the age of 25. Winners will share $5,500 in prize money and their entries will be published in the December issue of Voiceworks. Entries close Monday August 11.


If you’re aged 18-24, Buzzcuts is seeking contributors to attend and review films at the 2014 Melbourne International Film Festival. Applications close on Monday July 14, so get in quickly.

Momentum Books, the digital-first publishing imprint of Pan Macmillan Australia, is seeking a Digital Marketing Assistant to join its Sydney office. Applications close on Friday July 11.

The Melbourne Writers Festival is looking for venue support volunteers to help out during the August festival. They are also seeking customer service, marketing, event management, artist transport and green room attendant volunteers. The best perk? Volunteers have free access to all MWF events at Fed Square.

Penguin Random House is seeking an Editorial Assistant to work with the publishing team in its Sydney office.
