Submissions Around Town: June
Without attempting to sabotage our own efforts to attract your submissions, it’s that time of the month again. Peruse our list of competitions and writing opportunities. Don’t hold back if you see something that strikes your fancy.
To get the self plug out of the way first – we’re looking for prose, poetry, artwork, reviews and commentary based around the theme ‘Flashback.’ There are no restrictions on the theme – if you want to write a column mourning the loss of your favourite 90s gadgets, you can! Psychoanalyse Don Draper, review Sylvia Plath, write a story about lost childhoods and forgotten loves – it’s up to you. If you’re uncertain about a topic, feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Seizure are looking for fiction, non-fiction, faux non-fiction, poetry and creative miscellany between 1500 and 5000 words for their second edition. The theme is ‘sport.’
Overland are seeking fiction from new and emerging writers for their special online edition. Contributors will be paid $100. Get in quick – submissions close June 3.
Tincture are accepting submissions of fiction and creative non-fiction for their third issue. They are particularly interested in English writing from Asia and the Pacific. Published authors are paid.
Under 25? Voiceworks are accepting fiction, nonfiction, poetry and art until June 16. The theme is ‘nourish.’
One last very, very exciting opportunity for writers under 30 – Hologram Books are looking for manuscripts between 20,000 and 60,000 words. Submissions close August 11.
Entries for the Newcastle Poetry Prize are open until June 7. The entry must be a poem, or suite of poems, by a single author totalling no more than 200 lines. First prize is a whopper – $12,000.
The Society of Women Writers NSW are conducting their biannual National Open Poetry and Short Story Writing Competitions. Both competitions are open to all women writers over eighteen years of age who are permanent residents of Australia. First prize is $1000.
The Liz Huf Memorial Literary Awards are open until June 14. The categories are Open; Short Story – Theme (Gem); Micro Fiction; and Poetry. All winning entries earn a cash prize and will be considered for publication in an anthology.
And finally, if you’ve got an entertaining motorbike story up your sleeve, you could win $1000 in the MotorBike Legend competition.
MENTORSHIPS, INTERNSHIPS and OPPORTUNITIES
Text Publishing are looking for an editor to join their busy team. Applications close June 3. Even if you have no intention of applying, check out the comments thread. Trust us, just do it.
Aurealis is looking to expand its team of readers. It’s an unpaid role, but if you love science fiction, fantasy and/or horror, feel you have a discerning eye for a good story, and would like to read and assess short story submissions, it might be for you.
